2 Killed, 2 Injured in Head-on Collision in East Las Vegas
January 31, 2018 | Car Accident
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is saying that the driver of a vehicle that lost control and collided with an SUV may have been street racing. The head-on collision killed 2 people and 2 others suffered non-life-threatening injuries at a busy intersection on the east side of Las Vegas Tuesday night, Jan. 30th. According to detectives, a 1991 Acura Integra, being driven by a 20-year old driver, was traveling eastbound on Sahara Avenue, just east of Lamb Boulevard.
As the Acura approached Carrillo Street, the driver lost control of his vehicle and cross over the center median and into the westbound opposing lanes of traffic of Sahara Boulevard. The Acura collided head-on with a 2017 Dodge Durango causing the SUV to split in half. First responders were summoned to the intersection where they found a male passenger of the Acura lying in the roadway.
According to authorities he had been ejected from the vehicle during the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Acura was transported by ambulance to Sunrise Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a short time after arriving. The driver and a passenger of the Durango were also taken to Sunrise Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Sgt. Robert Stauffer of Metro's fatal detail said that he believed from evidence recovered at the scene that the Acura may have been going above the posted speed limit of 45 mph. Sgt. Stauffer noted that there were tire marks in a straight line that stretched across 3 lanes. It is unknown if the driver of the Acura was impaired or if drugs played a factor in the collision. The driver of the Dodge Durango exhibited no signs of impairment and remained at the scene cooperating with authorities. The Clark County coroner will release the identities of the deceased after next of kin have been notified. These deaths are the 3rd and 4th traffic-related fatalities in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction since the beginning of 2018.
