New Bills Introduced Designed for Greater Pedestrian and Motorist Safety

02/27/2015

Several bills are being introduced in the City in an effort to improve pedestrian and motorist safety.

There have been more pedestrian deaths in the past year in addition to more fatalities from car accidents. Hit and runs, also, have increased.

A Bill sponsored by Sen. Mark Manendo, D-Las Vegas proposes “pedestrian safety zones”.

Senate Bill 152 sponsored by Sen. Pat Spearman, D-North Las Vegas, is similar to this.

Manendo has indicated that he would like to introduce a bill which calls for stiffer penalties for leaving the scene of an accident.

A bill changing legislative language from accident to crash, Senate Bill 188 is also being introduced.

Increased Deaths in Las Vegas Valley

 03/02/2014

There were 60 pedestrian deaths last year in the Las Vegas Valley. Many more people were hospitalized.

More died from pedestrian fatalities in Clark County than in Manhatten, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, and Dallas. and the death rate is rising.

Raising community awareness and strengthening law enforcement did not affect the death rate.

The city is launching a $3.5 million program to reduce pedestrian endangerment. It includes new traffic lights and other improvements.

A lower economy has forced more people to walk.

Two hundred forty-four pedestrians were treated for injuries caused by car accidents by the University Medical Center in 2012. Medical bills associated with this treatment totaled $18 million. One hundred seventy-six of these persons were uninsured.

Alcoholism was a factor in many of the accidents.

Some people were using their Smart Phones at the time of the accidents which occurred.

The Nevada Highway Patrol initiated the fifth installment of the “Badge on Board” program. It is a program in which a NHP sargent sits in the passenger seat of a commercial vehicle to monitor the activities and behavior of motorists when they encounter commercial vehicles.

Among the activities monitored are: unsafe lane changes, tailgating, failure to signal lane changes, failure to yield the right of way and a variety of other driving behaviors.

The goal is to reduce accidents between cars and commercial vehicles.

Fourteen people died in 2010 from accidents between cars and commercial vehicles.

It is reported that there has been a 19 % reduction in these sorts of accidents since the inception of the program.
