The North Las Vegas Police Department is investigating a fatal 2-vehicle head-on collision that killed a 24-year old man and left a mother and child hospitalized early Wednesday morning, Jan. 3rd. NLVPD officers responded to a report of a crash at 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of lake Mead and Statz Street, east of Civic Center. According to investigators, the 24-year old man was driving a silver Dodge pickup truck heading eastbound on Lake Mead Boulevard, he was believed to be impaired according to witnesses at the scene.

The man crossed over the center median and into opposing traffic hitting head-on with a black Dodge truck that was heading westbound on Lake Mead Boulevard driven by a 22-year old woman with her 1-year old child.

The 24-year old man was rushed by ambulance to University Medical Center Trauma Center in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced dead by medical staff. The 22-year old woman and her child were also transported to University Medical Center where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries and are expected to survive.

North Las Vegas police spokesman Aaron Patty said Thursday morning that the man who died was not wearing a seatbelt and that that may have been a factor in his death. The intersection was closed while detectives conducted their investigation but was reopened around 7:00 a.m. according to a Tweet from the Regional Transportation Commission. This is the first fatal traffic-related crash North Las Vegas police have investigated this year. The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the man who died after his next of kin are notified.
