The Clark County coroner’s office has identified a man killed on U.S. Highway 95 after rear-ending a suspected drunken driver’s pickup near Charleston Boulevard Tuesday night, Jan. 2nd. According to Nevada Highway Patrol, 64-year old Henderson resident Scott E. Butler was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 95. Another driver, identified only as a 30-year old man in a Dodge Ram pickup truck, was also driving northbound on U.S. Highway 95 when it crashed into the right barrier wall then into the center median before coming to a stop in a travel lane.

The 30-year old driver was able to exit the vehicle and other motorists were able to maneuver around the disabled pickup. About 5 minutes later, Butler’s Nissan Pathfinder crashed into the rear of the disabled pickup. Nevada Highway Patrol Southern Command Traffic responded to reports of a collision between the 2 vehicles around 7:22 p.m. NHP trooper Jason Buratczuk said that Butler was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and resulted in him being ejected from his vehicle upon impact. First responders arrived on scene to find Butler in the road. HE was pronounced dead at the scene. His official cause of death was blunt force injuries and the manner was ruled an accident. The pickup truck’s driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The driver faces multiple charges including DUI and impeding the flow of traffic among others, NHP said. Investigators say they are not sure if impairment or not paying attention is contributed to the crash as other vehicles had avoided the disabled pickup. Trooper Buratckuk said this is the 3rd fatality investigated by NHP just 2 days into 2018. He urged drivers to stay safe and vigilant on the roadways.
