Mirta Curbelo Killed In 6 Vehicle Crash In Central Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV (March/22/2023) - A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the central Las Vegas Valley, resulting in the death of Mirta Curbelo, a 73-year-old woman from Las Vegas, and injuries to at least nine other individuals involved in the multi-vehicle collision.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a collision involving six vehicles took place near the junction of Desert Inn Road and Jones Boulevard, as reported by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

As per the statement from the LVMPD, the accident resulted in the fatality of one individual, and nine other individuals were transported to the University Medical Center for medical attention.

LVMPD reported that the driver of a 2005 Nissan Titan initiated a lane change while traveling westbound on Desert Inn, resulting in the loss of control of the vehicle. The Nissan collided with the rear of a Honda Civic, leading to a series of collisions at the intersection. Subsequently, the Nissan proceeded towards the southwest direction, crossing the center median on Desert Inn. In an attempt to avoid a collision, a Tesla veered off and struck the median. The Nissan then collided with the front of a 2010 Ford Flex.

An Ambulance Took Five People To University Medical Center

All five occupants of the Ford and the driver of the Nissan were transported to the University Medical Center via ambulance. Tragically, Mirta Curbelo, a passenger in the Ford, succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Additionally, four other individuals in two separate vehicles also sustained injuries as a result of the accident, according to LVMPD. The police have stated that there is no indication that impairment was a contributing factor in the collision.

The Clark County Coroner's office recently identified the deceased individual involved in the accident as Mirta C. Curbelo. The office is yet to determine the cause and manner of her death. This unfortunate event was one of four fatal crashes that took place on Tuesday on the roads of Las Vegas.

LVMPD stated that they do not suspect impairment played a role in the collision. The accident marks the 25th traffic-related fatality in LVMPD's jurisdiction thus far in 2023, so stay safe please.

As part of the investigation process, Desert Inn Road was temporarily shut down in both directions between Jones Boulevard and Red Rock Street.
