What is the Safest Way To Drive In A School Zone?

Driving safely in a school zone is crucial to ensuring the safety of children, pedestrians, and other motorists. Here are some tips on how to drive safely in a school zone:

  1. Follow the speed limit: Always obey the posted speed limit, which is typically much lower in school zones. The speed limit may be as low as 15 or 20 mph in some school zones, so make sure you slow down and maintain the posted speed limit.
  2. Look out for school children: Children can be unpredictable and may suddenly run into the street, so it's important to keep a lookout for them. Scan the area for children and keep your eyes on the road.
  3. Watch for school buses: School buses are a common sight in school zones, so be alert and watch for them. Remember to stop behind or in front of a school bus when it is picking up or dropping off students.
  4. Stay off your phone: Distracted driving is a major cause of accidents, so put your phone away while driving through a school zone. This will help you stay focused and alert to the surroundings.
  5. Yield to pedestrians: Pedestrians always have the right of way, so yield to them at crosswalks and intersections. Make sure you come to a complete stop and check both ways before proceeding.
  6. Follow the direction of crossing guards: Crossing guards are there to help children cross the street safely. Follow their directions and stop when they hold up their stop sign.

By following these tips, you can help ensure the safety of everyone in a school zone. Remember, it only takes a moment of carelessness to cause an accident, so always be alert and cautious while driving.
