Woman Killed Helping Wounded Dog
May 31, 2012 | Car Accident
Looking to aid a dog hit by a car, a woman was killed after also being hit late Wednesday night in Las Vegas.
The crash was reported in front of the Eastside Cannery hotel and casino along the northbound lanes of Boulder Highway near Harmon Avenue at around 10 p.m.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the 57 year old woman stopped her car in the center travel lane to assist another person who was tenting to a dog that had been hit by a car moments earlier.
She was standing on the passenger side of her Chrysler PT Cruiser when an oncoming motorist noticed her stopped car too late and failed to avoid the collision.
47 year old Steven Llewelyn was driving down the center lane in his 2007 Dodge Charger when he noticed the woman’s car stopped directly in front of him. He made a quick maneuver to swerve out of the way, avoiding the car, but hitting the woman.
She was immediately taken to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
The man who struck the poor woman remained on the scene to answer questions for police, it is unknown if any charges will be filed against him.
Investigators are working to determine if the driver was being negligent in not noticing the car in the road, or if the woman was creating a dangerous hazard in the middle of the road that the oncoming driver was unable to avoid.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, as the Clark County coroner’s office is still working to notify the woman’s next of kin.
The accident marks the 58th traffic related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan area in 2012. Though the circumstances are a bit more unique in this case, the tragic trend of car hitting pedestrian continues to occur, despite law enforcement’s best efforts.
A number of events and programs have been put on throughout the Las Vegas area to raise awareness about pedestrian safety, though accidents still pile up.
