Toddler Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash in Las Vegas Apartment Complex

October 17, 2017 | Wrongful Death

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is searching for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 1-year old boy after he walked into the street in front of his Las Vegas apartment complex in northeast valley Sunday evening, Oct. 15th. LVMPD officers were summoned to respond to reports of a hit-and-run crash that involved the toddler at the Liberty Village Apartment Complex in the 4700 block of Sphinx Way, near East Gowan Road and North Nellis Boulevard around 6:45 p.m. Officers arrived to find 1-year old Jaheim Heath non-responsive. The toddler was rushed to University Medical Center Trauma Unit where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. According the LVMD preliminary investigation and witness statements, Heath was outside playing with other neighborhood children when he was struck by a blue 4-door sedan. The driver didn't stop to render aid. Heath’s parents were unaware that he was outside and other children went into her house to say that her son was hit.

Neighbor Benjamin Luna said he didn't see what happened, but he heard it. "They were just out there playing cops and robbers, so I thought it was just them screaming... I thought it was kids being kids," Luna said. "They're usually playing on the grass, running back and forth, because they live right there. So they're usually running back and forth in the street riding their scooters and everything." Luna said it was common for kids of all ages to play outside, but he wishes drivers would be more careful and security guards would be stricter in enforcing speed limits. He also said there are no speed bumps inside the complex.

On Feb. 8, 2016, 2-year old Evelyn Green was killed when a 1995 Ford Econoline van struck the girl after she fell off her scooter outside her North Las Vegas home. The driver left the scene of the crash, and police arrested Daniel Garcia-Martinez 4 days later. Garcia-Martinez was sentenced to a minimum of 30 months in prison last year with a maximum of 80 months after he pleaded guilty to attempting to leave the scene of an accident. Jaheim Heath is the 6th person to die on Las Vegas valley roads in the past 24 hours, and the 110th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction since the beginning of 2017.

Anyone with information on the crash is urged to contact Metro's Collision Investigation section at 702-828-8189. To remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
