A 19-year-old from Reno has been arrested for trying to run down a police officer after a robbery.

Police report that the teen, Derek Kirk, was taken into custody at Washoe County Jail on suspicion of a felony assault against a police officer with a deadly weapon, eluding a police officer, and automobile theft Wednesday night. Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Police are also seeking additional charges from a robbery at a Wal-Mart on Second Street.

According to police, colony officers were called to the Wal-Mart at around 9:30 p.m. for an armed robbery, and the state police joined when Kirk fled northbound on the Truckee River.

As police were setting up a perimeter on the scene, a vehicle was seen driving through a parking lot where an office tried to make contact with the vehicle. Instead the vehicle sped towards him, crashing through a gate, attempting to run the officer down.

From there, officers pursued the vehicle on the southbound US395 but quickly called off the pursuit over concerns about public safety.

Nevada Highway Patrol used a spike strip on the 395 to bring the teen’s car to a stop, and Kirk’s arrest was made without further incident. The car was reportedly stolen from the lot where the officers first made contact with the boy.
