Students Honor Crossing Guards

May 18, 2012 | Car Accident

An appreciation breakfast was held by Robert Taylor Elementary School to recognize their local crossing guards Thursday morning.

Students and staff decorated place mats and wrote notes to crossing guards in a demonstration of their appreciation for the important role they play in their safety.

A number of students owe their health to the actions of their crossing guards. Anthony Woodard would have watched his brother get run down if not for the actions of guard Cheryl Pascone.

“This driver, she wasn’t looking,” said Woodard, “She just kept speeding across the road. But Cheryl saved him.” Though flattered, Pascone said she was simply  doing her job that day, though she admitted that close calls between students and vehicles are an all too often occurrence.

She says she sees far too many people using their cell phones while driving through the area. People are occupied sending text messages or talking on the phone, not focusing on the young futures of tomorrow directly in front of their massive SUVs.

The breakfast was put on by a local community group called “Look Out Kids About”. They are out to raise awareness about crosswalk safety, and the importance of crossing guards in school areas. A series of roundtable discussions are also being scheduled to further address the issue.

Vice President of Public Affairs for Look Out For Kids Lisa McKeon is hopeful for the future. “What's wonderful about our community here in Southern Nevada is everybody's been pulling together, especially because of recent events. Our cities are working really hard to try and problem solve.  We're looking around the nation, what other communities are coming up with."

Although crossing guards are vital for child safety around school zones, it is also important for drivers to understand what is at stake when driving through these areas. When you are in a school zone, you should focus on nothing but what is around you. Kids can dart out in front of your vehicle and disregard traffic signals. A simple lapse in judgment when driving around a school could lead to a fatal accident with a young child.
