The results of a pedestrian safety and awareness campaign launched by the North Las Vegas Police Department have been released, revealing numerous offenders.

The program, known as “Pedestrians Can Walk Safety” was designed to crack down on the kinds of dangerous and distracted driving behaviors that have led to such a high number of fatal accidents in the area so far this year. More specifically, police were looking to target drivers who failed to stop for passing pedestrians, as well as the pedestrians themselves failing to cross safely.

North Las Vegas officers issued a total of 69 violations to drivers failing to yield for pedestrians, 22 cellphone usage violations, and five seat belt or child restraint citations over the one day event, May 7th.

The results showed an upsetting number of drivers who failed to observe basic safety precautions. Too many motorists are still neglecting the rights of pedestrians making their way across the street, and instead burying their noses in their phones to send text messages and emails.

The campaign was put on in conjunction with a statewide awareness program paid for by a grant proved by the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety.
