New Technology Shown at CES Could Prevent Car Accidents
January 13, 2012 | Car Accident
As technology continues to advance and becomes a bigger part of our everyday lives, companies are finding new ways to use it. This year car manufacturers have taken a big step towards harnessing the internet to make driving more safe.
At this year’s International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the Ford booth displayed new technology that could help prevent accidents by using wireless signals to transmit the vehicle’s position to other vehicles.
This new technology can track a car’s speed, position, acceleration and heading angle. The signal broadcasts the information to any similarly equipped car within 1,000 feet at a rate of 10 times a second. Most importantly, if the computer senses a collision, it will alert the driver who can hopefully use the information to avoid it.
Mike Shulman, an engineer at Ford, says, “For a long time, car safety was passive safety. Seatbelts, airbags and other technologies were aimed at minimizing damage from accidents. This is about active safety and trying to prevent accidents.”
This new technology will be tested throughout the year in a number of vehicle styles and makers and it may become a required feature within a few years.
