New Road Technology Paves Way For Quieter Roads

June 5, 2012 | Car Accident

Several states and independent research organizations are working to develop a new pavement surface that will significantly decrease road noise and tire wear.

Virginia, California, Arizona, and Washington are among a number of states that are currently testing new surfaces that have the potential to cut noise inside cars by as many as five decibels.

The greater volume of vehicles, as well as the increased size and weight of today’s cars has prompted engineers to develop a new compound to reduce the ever increasing noise emanating from the road.

Researchers are looking into adding different substances into the pavement, including rubber, which would soften the road, making a smoother substance for cars to traverse.

Potential issues with these new techniques are their lack of strength overtime, and that their sound buffering benefits would be negated over time.

Eventually, the softer materials will break down, leaving the same hard pavement as before, rendering the new surface technologies essentially useless.

Despite the potential issues, research pushes forward. Different states are looking into different mixtures and materials, hoping to find the magical combination that will be both strong and quiet.

Europe is also interested in reducing sound on the roads, as new legislation was recently passed requiring cities to use quitter pavement when resurfacing streets.

Loud road noises can be a major distraction. Safe driving requires the use of all of your senses, and hearing cannot be overlooked. If your ears are filled with road noise, it becomes difficult to hear important things like sirens and horns warning of oncoming danger.

Failing to hear something like a siren from an ambulance can create a gravely dangerous situation. It is legally required for all drivers to pull to the side of the road and allow such emergency vehicles to pass, but if you fail to hear it, you cannot avoid it, and can easily find yourself pulling into an intersection as an ambulance is speeding through it.
