Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating whether speed factored into a fatal motorcycle crash that left a 32-year old man dead in the northwest valley Thursday night, Nov 9th. The incident occurred when LVMPD officers responded to a single-vehicle collision in front of Hecklethorn Elementary School, 5150 Whispering Sands Drive, near Jones Boulevard and Grand Teton Drive, just before 11:00 p.m.

The 32-year-old motorcyclist from California was traveling westbound on Whispering Sands when his motorcycle struck a center median, causing the rider to lose control of the bike, before crashing into a nearby sign. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle, which traveled another 700 feet after the crash, police said. The 32-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.

Investigators are speaking to witnesses who reported the rider was traveling with other motorcycles before the collision. Metro Sgt. Robert Stauffer said speed appears to be a factor in the crash with the motorcycle traveling significantly higher than the posted 25 mph speed limit and might have been racing with other motorcyclists. The man was wearing a helmet and several people stopped to help him, but he died at the scene, Stauffer said. Police are investigating the crash and trying to locate anyone who might have been riding with the man before the crash.

Officers had the intersection closed for their investigation and said it was not immediately known if the rider was impaired. The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the name of the deceased man in this crash once family has been notified. The man’s death marks the 113th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction since the beginning of 2017.
