Las Vegas, NV (July 4, 2018) – A pedestrian was struck and killed after he had attempted to cross the road in a marked crosswalk in central Las Vegas early Wednesday morning, 4th of July. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a vehicle vs. pedestrian collision that occurred around 12:00 a.m. at the intersection of East Flamingo Road and South Maryland Parkway.

According to witness testimony, the pedestrian was crossing East Flamingo Road in the marked crosswalk against the traffic signal when he was struck by a 2014 Toyota Corolla that was being driven by Maria Obeso, a resident of Las Vegas. Obeso remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Police said that she did not show any signs of impairment and was allowed to leave after officers had taken a statement from her. The pedestrian was transported to Sunrise Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. He was pronounced dead a short time later by medical staff. The Clark County Coroner's office is expected to release the identity of decedent after family notification. This is the 70th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction since the beginning of 2018.
