Increased Deaths in Las Vegas Valley
May 27, 2015 | Blog
There were 60 pedestrian deaths last year in the Las Vegas Valley. Many more people were hospitalized.
More died from pedestrian fatalities in Clark County than in Manhatten, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, and Dallas. and the death rate is rising.
Raising community awareness and strengthening law enforcement did not affect the death rate.
The city is launching a $3.5 million program to reduce pedestrian endangerment. It includes new traffic lights and other improvements.
A lower economy has forced more people to walk.
Two hundred forty-four pedestrians were treated for injuries caused by car accidents by the University Medical Center in 2012. Medical bills associated with this treatment totaled $18 million. One hundred seventy-six of these persons were uninsured.
Alcoholism was a factor in many of the accidents.
Some people were using their Smart Phones at the time of the accidents which occurred.
