Hero Speaks Out After Fiery Crash

May 19, 2012 | Car Accident

The Good Samaritan who pulled a man to safety out of a burning car after a head on collision Thursday morning has spoken out about the ordeal.

The accident, which killed two people, took place at 5 a.m. on US Highway 95 between Flamingo and Boulder Highway. According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, 20 year old Mario Valencia was driving his Ford Explorer SUV northbound on the southbound lanes of the highway when he smashed directly into a Toyota SUV heading in the correct direction, driven by 58 year old Ramiro Meza.

The collision caused both vehicles to burst into flames. At that time, a passing motorist, James Brathor stopped to help the victims. He was late, on his way to work when he stumbled upon the accident.

"I saw the driver open his door and wave his hand a little bit," said Brathor, "So, I ran over to him.  He was injured and moaning. He asked me to please help him. His legs were stuck in the wreckage. As I was trying to get him out, the dashboard and everything became fully engulfed in flames. The fire rushed over the top of him, and I just basically gave him a big tug, and he finally came loose. We both went flying over the rail to the other side. That's when the windows blew out of the vehicle."

Emergency crews arrived at the scene a short time after. They attempted to revive Meza, band took him to University Medical Center, though he was pronounced dead a short time later. The driver of the wrong-way SUV was killed in the impact of the initial accident.

Local news personnel were able to speak with Meza’s family, who were devastated by the accident. They say he was on his way to work when the accident took place.

Brathor was also visibly upset when told that Meza did not survive the ordeal. "I cried, I pray for his family. I feel for their loss. I'm no hero. I just saw someone was hurt. I only did what I hope someone would do for me. I wish he would have made it."

At this time, it is still unknown why Mario Valencia was traveling on the wrong side of the road, causing the fatal accident. Police are looking into the accident and hope to solve the mystery to bring closure to the incident.
