GM Recalls Chevy Malibu Over Faulty Sensors

May 27, 2012 | Car Accident

General Motors has announced a recall for a number of Chevy Malibu sedans over an issue with faulty sensors that could prematurely engage the airbag system.

According to the Detroit automakers, a total of 4,304 Malibu’s built between October 24 of last year and March 31 of this year come complete with a flaw in while hard braking can reset the vehicle’s sensing and diagnostic module.

If such a reset takes place just before a sharp turn, the system will erroneously believe that the vehicle has rolled, causing the roof rail airbag system to deploy. Seat belt pretensioners could also fail during a serious crash.

Naturally, a flaw that would cause airbags to deploy in a non-emergency situation requires a remedy. The sudden deployment can even be enough to shock a driver into making a dangerous maneuver as a result; actually causing an accident that would require the use of the airbag, now lifelessly flopped over, entirely useless.

GM will start to notify customers of the recall starting Jun 1st. Everyone with a vehicle effected will be able to take their vehicle to the nearest GM dealership and have the module reprogramed at no cost. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s toll free safety hotline at any time.

Driving around in a vehicle with faulty equipment is dangerous. If your vehicle has been affected by a recall, you should remedy the situation immediately. If you wait to fix the issue, you could find yourself in an accident with no one to blame but your lack of action in fixing the problem.

Recalls are implemented by companies looking to avoid trouble. A potential problem is identified, and a fix must be implemented, lest General Motors gets to deal with dozens of lawsuits over faulty manufacturing.
