Father of Slain Son Fighting to Increase Road Safety
May 18, 2012 | Motorcycle Accident
A Las Vegas father has not given up in his attempt to install a 4-awy stop at an intersection that killed his son earlier this year.
For the past few weeks, Todd Strasser has been gathering signatures for his petition to the mayor’s office. As of Thursday, he has amassed one thousand signatures, and presented the petition to City Hall.
The intersection in question rests at Alexander and Bradley streets, where a motorcycle accident took the life ofhis son Jesse. At this time, only 2 stop signs are present at the location.
An investigation into the accident revealed that Jesse himself was at fault in the crash. He was traveling at a very high rate of speed, which was the direct cause of the accident. Despite this, Todd believes that something must be done to prevent another fatality.
The city is more skeptical about the need for a 4-way stop. They say that the intersection is not dangerous, and aside from the accident involving Strasser’s son, there has only been one other accident at the location, which was not fatal.
In spite of this, Strasser says he will not stop until the change is implemented. "In the past two weeks I have witnessed probably a dozen or more close calls," he says, "I mean very, very close calls. I don't think two stop signs is asking too much for Jesse."
The city has announced that they will conduct a more complete traffic study at the intersection, with its completion expected by the early part of next week. If the city seems the interaction unsafe, appropriate action will be taken.
The streets of Las Vegas are no stranger to fatal accidents. In 2012 alone, there have been 52 recorded traffic deaths in the Las Vegas Metropolitan area. Hopefully, research such as what is being done at this fateful intersection can reveal potential dangers for motorists and pedestrians, and preventative measures can be taken.
