Traffic accidents resulting in death have jumped dramatically in the first quarter of 2012 when compared to last year’s numbers.

According to a report released by the Nevada Department of Public Safety, 57 people have been killed in accidents from January to March, 11 more than last year during the same time. There have been 12 pedestrian deaths this year, twice as many as last year.

Most of the pedestrian accidents took place in Clark County, home of Las Vegas, a city with extremely heavy foot traffic where it is legal to walk around with an alcoholic beverage outside.

State officials say that there is no one reason for the rise in deaths, and that the new laws making it illegal to text message or talk on a hand-held cellphone while driving seem to not be making an impact.
