Family Pleads for Public's Help Finding Hit-and-Run Driver

March 7, 2018 | Wrongful Death

The mother of a teenager from Las Vegas who is struggling to recover following being sideswiped and run off the road in an apparent road rage incident in Summerlin, is asking for the public’s help to identify the suspect. The incident began on Monday just before 2:00 p.m. when Elizabeth Vinson was driving on the 215 Beltway between the Charleston and Sahara exits. That’s when a white Nissan sedan with paper tags came speeding up to driver’s side of Vinson’s vehicle and ran her off the road. Vinson swerved off the road, rolled into a rock embankment, and crashed into a chain-link fence with her vehicle coming to rest on its roof. Nevada Highway Patrol dispatchers captured the panicked calls in the aftermath of the crash. “I just witnessed a really bad accident. The car is flipped upside down,” said one caller.

“I think they took off. They took off,” said another. According to NHP Trooper Travis Smaka, the hit-and-run driver is described as a white man in his early 40’s with brown hair. “They actually stopped, got out of their vehicle to witness what had happened, looked at the damage caused and then got back in his vehicle and fled the scene,” explained Smaka. “It makes you wonder what kind of person would do that?” Trooper Smaka continued. Elizabeth Vinson and her family are pleading for your help finding him. Angelina Cordova admits she nearly lost her daughter, but the teen’s quick-thinking decision to kick out a window may have saved her life. “She's courageous and tenacious. I almost lost her. Seeing that car upside down really makes you want to hold them close,” said Cordova. 2 days after the crash, Vinson reached a milestone she feared she would not live to see. “Today is Elizabeth's 18th birthday,” said Cordova. Although the teenager is on crutches, Vinson is celebrating another year of life. She knows, it could’ve been much worse. “Wish I was able to walk normally, but I'm just grateful I'm alive,” said Vinson. If you recognize the hit-and-run driver, investigators want to hear from you immediately. You can call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or Nevada Highway Patrol.
