Elderly Pedestrian Killed Attempting to Cross Street
April 10, 2012 | Car Accident
An elderly woman was killed early Sunday morning attempting to cross the street in Las Vegas.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, the 60-year-old woman was making her way across Sahara Avenue from the south to the north curb against the traffic signal when a 2010 Nissan Altima driven by 41-year-old Mark Schaap was passing through the intersection with a green light.
Upon entering the westbound travel lane, the Nissan sedan struck the woman. She was immediately taken to University Medical Center Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The identity of the woman has not yet been released, and the coroner’s office is in the process of notifying the family. This is the 38th traffic-related fatality in the LVMPD’s jurisdiction in 2012.
Authorities are still investigating the accident to determine if the driver could have avoided the collision at all, even though the woman was at fault walking into the intersection against the light.
