A wayward SUV driver was killed after a head on collision on US 95 early Thursday morning in Las Vegas.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, a call was made about an SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US 95 near Russell Road at 4:48 a.m. Shortly thereafter, the SUV struck a vehicle near Flamingo Road, continued down the road and ran into an SUV near Boulder Highway.

The collision caused both SUVs to burst into flames. A witness on scene was able to rescue the driver of the vehicle driving in the correct direction, but the driver traveling in the wrong direction was trapped inside.

That driver was pronounced dead when emergency crews arrived on the scene. The driver of the vehicle hit, a 58-year-old Vegas resident, was taken to University Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition. The man that pulled him to safety was also taken there for treatment of minor injuries.

The debris from the collision between the two SUVs also caused another accident with three other vehicles, though none were hurt in that incident. The condition of the first driver hit in the chaotic string of accidents is not known.

Police closed down the section of US 95 to investigate the accident for several hours. At this time it is unknown why the SUV was traveling in the wrong direction.
