Crash Kills 9 Year Old Boy in Eastern Valley

December 5, 2017 | Car Accident

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a 2-vehicle collision that killed a 9-year old boy and left another young boy hospitalized in critical condition in the southeast Las Vegas valley Monday morning, Dec. 4th. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. near the intersection of Broadbent Boulevard and Cherry Street, near Clark County Wetlands Park. According to Metro Police, a Chrysler van driven by 30-year old Ashlea Hawk of Las Vegas, along with her 2 sons aged 9-years old and 6-years old was traveling northbound on Cherry Street.

Hawk had attempted to make an Illegal U-turn when the Chrysler van was struck by a Ford F-150 that hit the van’s right side. The Chrysler van was not equipped with back seats nor were the children restrained in seat belts.

Hawk and her 2 boys were transported by ambulance to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where the 9-year old was pronounced dead by medical staff. The 6-year old suffered critical injuries while Hawk suffered moderate injuries. The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the 9-year old victim as Raul Xavier Gamboa. His official cause and manner of death are still pending completion of the LVMPD investigation. The driver of the truck, Luciano Garcia, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. He was not suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or marijuana. Police say there could potentially be a child endangerment case or a vehicular manslaughter case but the investigation remains open.

"Unfortunately, we've got 2 children that were unrestrained in the back of the minivan, no seats, no child seats, nothing,” said LVMPD’s Sgt. Paul McCullough. "The message has been very clear for many years not only do we wear seat belts in our vehicles when we operate them but most importantly our children are restrained in the car," Sgt. Paul McCullough continued. This is the 122nd traffic-related death in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Jurisdiction since the beginning of 2017.
