Cop Rear Ends Car While Transporting Inmate

June 4, 2012 | Car Accident

An unsuspecting motorist was rudely introduced to a police cruiser late Saturday morning in Las Vegas as an officer transporting a prison inmate rear ended his car.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the accident took place at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Arville Street at about 10:45 a.m.

The vehicle had come to a stop at the intersection to allow for a pedestrian to pass through the crosswalk when the police car crashed into the back of it.

The two occupants of the police car were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The inmate reportedly smacked his head against the partition between the front and back seats of the cruiser.

Initial reports showed that the neither the driver of the car that was hit nor the pedestrian crossing the street were injured in the incident.

The LVMPD is currently investigating the accident to determine the full set of circumstances that led to the accident. There is no word on whether or not the car stopped or the pedestrian crossed improperly, or if the police car simply did not notice in time.

It is an odd twist of irony that sees a police car hitting another car stopping to let a pedestrian cross the street. Las Vegas law enforcement agencies have been battling with roadway safety all year, as the number of traffic related fatalities is worryingly high through 2012.

Las Vegas is a city replete with pedestrians and drivers making risky moves and trying to get around quicker by cutting corners in safety. Such a densely traversed area with a large volume of tourists is naturally going to be a place of danger and frequent car accidents, but there is no excuse for failing to adhere to the simple traffic laws put in place to keep people safe.
