A dangerous intersection that took the life of a young girl in October of last year is finally undergoing improvements to make the area safer for pedestrians in North Las Vegas.

The intersection in question lies at Bent Arrow Drive and Camino Eldorado, where a fatal accident took the life of 6-year-old Amelia Decker seven months ago.

Decker and her three friends were making their way across the road when a wayward car drove through the intersection, hitting all three young girls. The two girls walking with Decker, Rain and Alyssa Mowery, were seriously injured in the accident.

Rain was able to make a full recovery from her injuries, but Alyssa suffered serious brain damage, and was forced to relearn important motor skills like walking and is still involved in major rehabilitation.

Concerned parents and residents in the area long believed the intersection to be a danger because there was little warning for oncoming drivers about the presence of young children in the crosswalks.

"It wasn't safe before," says Christin Mowery, the mother of Rain, and Alyssa. "There was no way to alert cars that a pedestrian was crossing. You just had to hope that drivers would see you and stop."

The improvements being made in the area will include a button for pedestrians to push when crossing that display a rapidly flashing light to alert oncoming drivers.

The parents of the young girls involved in the crash, Christin and Decker’s mom Michele Terry, are hopeful that the improvements made as a result of the terrible accident involving their daughters will save lives in the future.

"It's good to know that something came of this," says Terry. "Hopefully now, all of the children that cross at that crosswalk every day will be safe."

The construction project is expected to take about a week to complete. Concerned parents are optimistic that the improvements will make a strong impact in the safety of their children walking to and from school.
