June 7th ─ a bicyclist is dead after being hit by a dump trunk on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. at the intersection of South Nellis Boulevard and East Walnut Avenue as the bicyclist was crossing South Nellis Boulevard. The bicyclist failed to yield to traffic and crossed the path of a dump truck according to Metropolitan Police Department. Nellis Boulevard was closed in all directions from Bonanza Road until Walnut Avenue. This accident marks the 62nd traffic related death inside Metropolitan’s jurisdiction since January, and the 4rd traffic fatality since the beginning of June. The 61st fatality involved a 56-year old male driver who crashed his vehicle into a block wall on Goldhill Rd where Goldhill Road ends at the L--intersection with Basil Leaf Drive. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 60th fatality involved a traffic collision between a car and a pickup truck near the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Rancho Drive. As the car turned in front of the pickup truck, the left front of the car made contact with the right front of the pickup truck. The driver of the car succumbed to his injuries and died a day later at UMC Trauma Unit. The 59th fatality involved an SUV and bicyclist at the intersection of Sandstone Bluffs Drive and Homestretch Drive. The driver of the car had been driving above the posted speed limit and the front of his vehicle caught onto the bicycle causing it to eject the rider. The driver of the vehicle failed a field sobriety test and was arrested for DUI with Substantial Bodily Harm. The 54-year old bicyclist died at UMC the following day. All traffic fatalities mentioned are still under investigation.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department logged 62 fatal traffic deaths which is the highest in recent years. According to the Department’s very own website, in 2016 there were a total of 122 fatalities of which 118 were solely caused by collisions. Compared to just 3 years earlier in 2014 Metropolitan’s website logged just 94 fatalities and of those only 89 were due to traffic collisions.
