The Nevada Highway Patrol initiated the fifth installment of the "Badge on Board" program. It is a program in which a NHP sargent sits in the passenger seat of a commercial vehicle to monitor the activities and behavior of motorists when they encounter commercial vehicles.
Among the activities monitored are: unsafe lane changes, tailgating, failure to signal lane changes, failure to yield the right of way and a variety of other driving behaviors.
The goal is to reduce accidents between cars and commercial vehicles.
Fourteen people died in 2010 from accidents between cars and commercial vehicles.
It is reported that there has been a 19 % reduction in these sorts of accidents since the inception of the program.
