9-Year Old Boy Struck and Killed in the South Valley

March 28, 2018 | Pedestrian Accident

A 9-year old boy was killed after he was struck by a vehicle as he rode his bike home near a middle school in the South Valley on Friday afternoon, Mar. 23rd. Las Vegas Metropolitan police responded to reports of a collision between an SUV and a child pedestrian on a bike sometime around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Jack Leavitt Street and Riverdance Avenue which is next to Charles Silvestri Middle School. According to LVMPD Sgt. Paul McCullough, the 9-year old boy was riding his bicycle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Riverdance Avenue.

The 31-year old female driver of the SUV, that was traveling southbound on Jack Leavitt Street, stopped at the stop sign near the T-intersection with Riverdance Avenue. As the driver looked to her right, she saw what appeared to be clear traffic. The driver then accelerated and committed to turning right on Riverdance Avenue, she struck the 9-year old boy from the passenger-side of her SUV. LVMPD Officer Laura Meltzer said that the boy had gotten stuck in the tire well of the SUV after being struck and remained trapped there for some time before being freed by bystanders. The boy was not wearing a helmet. The boy was comforted by bystanders until paramedics arrived. He was transported by ambulance to Sunrise Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead a few hours after arriving.

According to Sgt. McCullough, fault has not been determined and the driver did not show signs of impairment. Sgt. McCullough said the driver was with her 8-year old daughter at the time of the collision. She was allowed to leave the scene in the SUV with a friend driving the vehicle. "She is very distraught and upset," McCullough said. "We need folks to slow down. We need folks to stop driving like idiots. Pay attention to your surroundings. We need our pedestrians to have their heads on a swivel, whether you have right of way or not. You need to be clear before you commit to a roadway... In this case here, we've got a young kid that's, you know, perfect angel."
