A 3-year old girl is dead and 3 other children were injured when the driver of the semi-truck reportedly made an illegal left turn resulting in a crash on northbound Interstate 15 (I-15) Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19th. Nevada Highway Patrol were summoned to respond to an accident involving a blue Volvo semi-truck hauling a trailer and a red 2005 Kia van around 4:00 p.m. near mile marker 77 on I-15 in the Moapa River Indian Reservation.

The semi-truck was heading northbound in the right outside lane on I-15 with the Kia van behind the semi-truck in the left lane. The semi driver began braking and made an improper left turn into the dirt center median with signage marked 'No U-Turn' and 'Authorized Vehicles Only' directly in the path of the Kia causing it to crash and become pinned underneath the trailer. 5 people were in the van at the time of the crash including an adult female driver and 4 children.

The woman driver and 2 of her children were taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas with non-life threatening injuries. An 11-year old boy was extricated from the wreckage using the Jaws of Life. He was also transported to University Medical Center-Trauma unit by ambulance with serious but non-life threatening injuries. A Mercy Air medical helicopter crew arrived on scene to transport a 3-year old girl, who had been properly seated in a child safety seat at the time of the crash, to Sunrise Pediatrics in Las Vegas with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Her name has yet to be released by the Clark County coroner. The semi driver was uninjured.

The incident caused both northbound and southbound lanes in the area of the crash to be closed while emergency crews responded, leading to major delays for motorists Sunday evening. Charges against the semi driver are pending at this time, NHP said. Impairment and speed do not appear to factors in this crash. This crash remained under investigation.
