3 Traffic Fatalities near Las Vegas Strip

June 28th ─ 3 fatalities occurred over the weekend, one involved an accident with a motorcycle and a vehicle, the other two involved accidents between pedestrians and a vehicles. The first accident occurred Friday evening around 8:06 p.m. at the intersection of El Capitan Way and Flamingo Road. Police responded to reports of a crash between a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle and a 2005 Hyundai Elantra. According to Metro police, the motorcyclist was traveling east on Flamingo Road at a high rate of speed before colliding with the Hyundai Elantra that was traveling west on Flamingo. The Hyundai was making a left turn into an apartment complex when the accident happened. Witnesses told police that the motorcyclist was driving fast but he wasn't exceeding the speed limit. The Hyundai Elantra driver did not seem impaired. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and was not transported to the hospital. The driver of the Hyundai was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The accident is still under investigation but Metro Police said that the Hyundai driver had failed to yield to the motorcyclist’s right of way which factored in the accident. It is unclear whether the Hyundai driver will face criminal charges but police remind drivers of the importance of being clear of traffic before attempting to make a turn.
The second fatality occurred Saturday morning at approximately 7:42 a.m. when a 2005 Honda Accord that was traveling east on Flamingo Road crossing Claymont Street struck a pedestrian. The pedestrian was identified as a 55-year old woman. Evidence recorded at the scene and witness testimony revealed that the female pedestrian was walking across the eastbound lanes of Flamingo Road outside of the marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was taken to Sunrise Hospital Trauma Center where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the Honda Accord was identified as Christian Fujita Miyashiro, 23, of Las Vegas. Miyashiro remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, but exhibited signs being inebriated. Miyashiro failed a Field Sobriety Tests administered by officer and was arrested and take to the Clark County Detention Center for DUI deaths.
The final fatality occurred at around 2:35 a.m. early Monday morning. The accident involved a 1999 Ford Explorer and a 31-year old male pedestrian. The accident happened on Tropicana Avenue east of Wilbur Street. According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling west on Tropicana Avenue in the middle travel lane when a pedestrian was crossing Tropicana Avenue outside of the marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was struck by the front of the Explorer and thrown onto the roadway. The driver of the Explorer remained at the collision scene and did not show any signs of intoxication. The pedestrian was transported to Sunrise Trauma Center where despite medical treatment he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by hospital staff. These deaths mark Las Vegas’ 68th, 69th and 72nd deaths since the beginning of the year of 2017.
