3 Pedestrians Killed in DUI Crash in Las Vegas

December 14, 2017 | Wrongful Death

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle DUI collision east of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus that killed 3 pedestrians and left 7 people hospitalized with 2 of them in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 13th. LVMPD officers responded to reports of an accident that occurred at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Eastern Avenue at 3:15 p.m. According to authorities, a 2003 Ford Expedition was traveling in the southbound lanes of Eastern Avenue when, for reasons unknown, the Expedition rear-ended a 2016 Ford Mustang.

The driver of the Expedition did not stop and continued driving. The Expedition then collided with the back of a 2001 GMC Jimmy near the intersection of Flamingo Road and crossed the center median where the driver struck 3 pedestrians, who were in a crosswalk on Eastern Avenue. The Expedition continued driving after striking the pedestrians, and hit 3 other vehicles before finally coming to a stop. 5 other vehicles were hit by debris and another was damaged when it collided with 1 of the vehicles struck by the Expedition.

First responders arrived and pronounced the 3 pedestrians dead at the scene. The ages of those pedestrians who were struck were 69-years old, 49-years old, and 19-years old. The names of the deceased have not been released by the Clark County coroner. 12 drivers and their passengers were also involved in the incident. 6 of those people were injured. A 26-year old woman who was transported to University Medical Center is in critical condition. The driver who is reportedly responsible for the incident, 31-year old Daniel Becker, received minor injuries. 2 children, aged 4-years old and 9-years old, suffered minor injuries in the collision.

Becker was booked into the Clark County Jail late Wednesday on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving. Records showed he faces several charges including 3 counts of driving under the influence resulting in death, 1 count of driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm, and 4 counts of reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm.

Investigators state that Becker may have been impaired, but a man who claimed to be Becker's boss explained that the driver had a medical condition. "He wasn't impaired or nothing. He's epileptic and he had a seizure on his way home from work. He just left the job site with me. I'm his boss," said a man who didn't want to be identified. The man added they both worked construction downtown and he had seen Becker just 15 minutes before the multi-vehicle collision. "He even has clearance from the doctors that he's allowed to drive. I just wanted everybody to know that he's not really a bad guy. He did just have a medical condition. This is just a really bad accident unfortunately for everyone involved." the man explained. Family members also state that alcohol was not a factor in the fatal crash. "He was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol," said Becker's sister, "...he has had epilepsy since he was a child...he's on medication."

The pedestrian’s deaths mark the 127th, 128th, and 129th traffic-related fatalities in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction since the beginning of 2017.
