17-Year Old Dies after Hit-and-Run Crash in Northern Las Vegas

August 2, 2017 | Car Accident

August 1st ─ Investigators with the North Las Vegas Police Department say they are actively seeking the driver of a pickup who fled the scene after crashing into a bus stop that killed a 17-year old local girl early Friday morning. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. near Cheyenne Avenue and Clayton Street in North Las Vegas. According to authorities, citing the preliminary investigation, a pickup truck containing 5 young occupants was traveling east on Cheyenne Avenue at a very high rate of speed, approaching Clayton Street, when the vehicle crossed the center median over seven lanes into oncoming traffic and eventually left the roadway, striking a bus stop awning. The pickup truck was flipped on its side, concluding the crash. The 5 young occupants have been identified as: 1 male driver, a male passenger and 3 female passengers.

Police say they range in age from teenagers to early 20's. Killed in the crash was 17-year old Brittnie Brown of Las Vegas. Police say the only male passenger and the male driver fled the scene on foot, leaving behind the injured women; including Brown. Brown and the 2 other young women in the truck were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, where Brown was later pronounced dead by medical staff. The two remaining young women are expected to survive.

Amaree Williams, who had been friends with Brown since 8th grade responded to questions about the tragic accident, “That just goes to show you, that's not your friends. Everybody is not your friend. I don’t know how someone could just leave her like that. That just shows you, that's not your real friend,” said Williams. "I wouldn't have left her like that. Even if I knew I was going to be in trouble, I would've stayed right there, until something was done. I wouldn't have left her”.

Aside from the age range, no description of the missing driver has yet been released by police. If you have any information about what may have happened or know anything about the two men who fled the scene, you are urged to contact the North Las Vegas Police Department or call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
