Man Killed, Pregnant Woman Injured in Rollover Accident

May 23, 2012 | Car Accident

A solo vehicle rollover accident took the life of a driver and put his pregnant passenger in the hospital Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, the accident took place at about 1:45 p.m. on the northbound lanes of US Route 95 near Rancho.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers found an overturned Jeep Cherokee SUV with both of its passengers still inside. The driver of the vehicle, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger who is nine months pregnant was also found inside the vehicle. She was immediately taken to University Medical Center for treatment of injuries of an unknown severity. Officers on the scene reported that she was conscious while being transported to the hospital.

According to Trooper Jeremie Elliot, a faulty tire was the cause of the crash. "The tread separated from the tire itself causing the vehicle to veer right into the wall. The vehicle rolled over from there and you can see the tragedy that happened after that."

"We have our major accident investigation team on scene, measuring and taking photographs," added Elliot. "They'll interview any witnesses and go to the hospital later to talk to the passenger and piece everything together from there to determine what exactly caused this."

Traffic along the major highway was reduced to two lanes while crews cleaned up the mess of debris and officers conducted a more thorough investigation into what else may have been in play in the crash. Traffic was reportedly backed up all the way to the Spaghetti Bowl.

Basic vehicle upkeep is vitally important in safely navigating our nation’s roadways. It is challenging enough to deal with the dangerous and distracted drivers; to have to deal with your car suddenly disintegrating on a freeway is insanity. Always be sure to perform scheduled checkups, replace tires when they run out of tread, and change your oil when needed.

These simple fixes are easy to overlook, but can be the difference between safely getting to your destination and ending up upside down in your car as firefighters use the jaws of life to pull you and your broken body out of the vehicle.
