Police Cracking Down on Seatbelt Usage

May 21, 2012 | Car Accident

In a concerted effort to raise awareness about the importance of seatbelt safety, law enforcement agencies across the country are cracking down on drivers who refuse to buckle up.

The seatbelt issue rose to the forefront again in Las Vegas after a May 14th rollover accident on the 215 Beltway that killed the driver and severally injured the two passengers on board.

An investigation into the accident showed that none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.

Dangerous accidents likes this are the reason behind the initiative. Too many motorists are ignoring such a basic safety procedure, and wholly avoidable fatalities continue to pile up.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has also made a point to emphasize the importance of wearing seatbelts during nighttime hours. According to statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, 61% of the more than 10,600 people killed in car accidents during nighttime accidents were not wearing seatbelts.

"Too many drivers and passengers on the road at night are not wearing their seat belts, and it all too often ends in tragedy," said NHP Trooper Jeremie Elliott. "Our goal is to save more lives, so the Nevada Highway Patrol will be out enforcing seat belt laws around the clock."

The nationwide “Click It or Ticket” crackdown is set to begin today, May 21st, and run through June 9th. Officers will be on the lookout, citing drivers who fail to abide by the seatbelt law.

Police will not be in a forgiving mood towards motorists caught in violation. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone not buckled up, no warning and no excuses” says Trooper Elliot.

Failing to engage your seatbelt is reckless. The wildly simple act of buckling up can be the difference between life and death in the event of an accident. Serious injury and death caused by neglecting such an easy thing is frustrating for law enforcement agencies and car makers alike. Your seatbelt is the first line of defense, keeping you securely in position, even as your vehicle flails about wildly in a crash. Without it, you become just another piece of debris being strewn across the road in the event of an accident.
