Nation’s First Self-Driving Car License Issued
May 7, 2012 | Car Accident
The first self-driving vehicle is set to hit the roads of Nevada after being issued a license to legally operate on public streets.
The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles announced on Monday that it believed that Google’s self-driving vehicle technology met all of the state’s requirements after a demonstration through Carson City and the Las Vegas Strip.
The vehicles will feature an easily recognizable red license plate and a symbol for infinity predominantly displayed, which DMV Director Bruce Breslow says “best represents the car of the future”.
At this stage, test vehicles are only to be driven when two pilots are in the vehicle. Once further testing is developed, only a single operator will be needed in the car, which will then be marked with a green license plate.
Nevada is the first state in the country to legalize the use of autonomous vehicles on public roads. The system, designed by Google, seeks to make driving safer and more efficient by eliminating the possibility of driver error, which is a welcome proposition to the streets of Nevada, which are a haven for dangerous and fatal accidents.
