Motorcyclist Loses Leg in Accident
May 3, 2012 | Motorcycle Accident
A man is fighting for his life after losing his leg in a tragic read end accident in Las Vegas Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, two motorcycles were driving down Flamingo Road near Decatur Boulevard when one of the riders, 25-year-old Jimmy Hardy, crashed into the back of a Mercedes at the crest of a hill.
Hardy’s injures were so severe that paramedics on the scene were forced to amputate his leg. His arm was also in danger of being lost, but doctors were able to save it.
He was transported to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition, fighting to live. Police said that the man’s blood loss was severe.
The driver of the Mercedes received minor injuries in the crash, and was transported to Spring Valley Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses to the accident say that the two motorcycles were traveling at a very high rate of speed, and were likely racing. Investigators confirm that excessive speed made the collision unavoidable.
When asked about the crash, Metro Sergeant Richard Strader stressed the importance of driving under the understanding that the road is shared by many others, and traveling at such speeds is never acceptable.
