Pedestrian Safety Event Held to Help Curb Fatal Accidents
April 12, 2012 | Car Accident
A pedestrian safety event will be held on Thursday in North Las Vegas to promote a greater focus on the protection of folks crossing Vegas’ streets.
The “Pedestrians Can Walk Safety” event is being put on by the North Las Vegas Police Department and will be held from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. The focus will be on targeting mid-block crosswalks with high traffic volume in an attempt to put a stop to the high propensity of fatal accidents in those areas.
Officers will be targeting vehicles that fail to yield for pedestrians at the crosswalk, pass other vehicles that have stopped to allow for crossing, and pedestrians who fail to use the crosswalk to cross the street.
The goal of the event is to reeducate drivers and pedestrians on the standard safety procedures for crossing streets. Las Vegas has become an increasingly dangerous place for people walking the streets within the past several months.
With accident numbers greatly increased over the same period last year, work must be done to curb this fatal trend. Police are hoping that draying such mainstream attention to the issue will prompt people to be mindful of the road and those who traverse it.
