February 22, 2012 | Train Accident
A train full of passengers crashed into a busy station in Buenos Aires early Wednesday morning, causing the worst train accident in decades.
Reports indicate that 49 people, 48 adults and 1 child, were killed in the accident, and at 550 people sustained injuries. Those more seriously hurt were taken away in helicopters and ambulances to nearly hospitals, while those with minor scrapes and bruises were treated on scene. Rescuers at the crash had to cut through the roof of the train an erect a pulley system to get many of the passengers out of the wreckage.
The train arrived at the station, still traveling at 16 miles per hour when it slammed into the barrier at the end of the stations platform, crushing the engine car and the cars behind it. One car was reported to have gone almost 20 feet into the car in front of it.
The driver of the train has been taken to the hospital and has not yet been questioned. The cause of the accident is not yet known.
The accident is the deadliest of its kind in Argentina since a crash in 1970 that killed over 200 people.
