Nye County, NV (May 20, 2018) - A deadly 3-vehicle collision has left 5 people dead and 1 woman critically injured on US 95 in Nye County, about 85 miles northwest of Las Vegas Sunday afternoon, May 20th. The incident occurred around 4:23 p.m. Sunday between state routes 373 and 160 on US Highway 95 near Amargosa Valley. Nye County sheriff’s Department responded to a request from NHP for assistance investigating the fatal collision.

According to investigators, a Nissan that was traveling in the northbound lanes on US 95 where it was approaching a GMC pickup truck that was traveling slowly. The agitated driver attempted to pass the GMC truck and crossed over into the southbound lanes against the flow of traffic where it immediately collided head-on with another Nissan vehicle that was traveling southbound near miles marker 27. That portion of the highway, where there is only 1 lane in each direction, was OK to pass, according to NHP. The Nissan that was trying to pass the GMC pickup truck quickly burst into flames killing both driver and passenger occupying that vehicle. The driver and passenger in the southbound Nissan that collided head-on with the passing Nissan were also killed during the collision. The southbound Nissan veered into the GMC pickup truck, causing it to roll-over off the highway and ejected the male driver, killing him. A female passenger in the GMC pickup truck survived and was airlifted to University Medical Center where she was treated for critical injuries and head trauma. She was initially listed in critical condition but later listed in stable condition. She is expected to survive. The highway was shut down as detectives conducted their investigation. The highway was reopened early Monday morning.
