Why Holidays Are High-Risk During The 4th of July
- Increased alcohol consumption: Festive gatherings often involve drinking, and some people misjudge their ability to drive afterward.
- Higher traffic volume: More people travel during holidays, increasing the chances of encountering impaired drivers.
- Late-night driving: Many crashes occur between midnight and 3 a.m., when visibility is low and impairment is more common.
The Consequences of Drinking and Driving
- Fatalities spike: December drunk driving deaths are at a 15-year high, with nearly 300 lives lost between Christmas and New Year’s alone.
- Legal penalties: DUI charges can lead to jail time, fines, license suspension, and long-term consequences for employment and insurance.
- Emotional toll: Families affected by drunk driving face trauma and grief, especially painful during a season meant for joy.
How to Stay Safe From Drunk Drivers
- Plan ahead: Use rideshare apps, designate a sober driver, or arrange overnight stays.
- Speak up: If someone’s impaired, help them find a safe way home.
- Stay alert: Buckle up, avoid late-night travel, and report suspected drunk drivers to authorities.
The holidays should be memorable for the right reasons.
