A car accident can take place at any given moment while on the road. Approximately 2.35 million people get injured in a car accident per year, as estimated by The Association for Safe International Road Travel. Being a pro-active driver and using caution while driving is extremely important, on the other hand knowing what to do right after a car accident is of equal importance. Here are a few tips and guidelines to make sure that if you are in an accident, you know what to do:

1. Keep Yourself Calm

A car accident can be an extremely terrifying experience. The first thing to do is become aware of the surrounding scene. Do not leave the scene of the accident or it could become a hit and run and you may have trouble proving it wasn't.

Examine yourself for any injuries caused by the accident. Try and get out of your vehicle as quickly and as safely as you can. Then go and try to verify if any one else was injured in the accident. Offer help to anyone else in the accident, to avoid further injuries. Try not to get aggressive or angry with the other party, even if you believe it is their fault. Keep yourself cool and calm.

2. Make Contact To The Authorities

Try to dial 911 as soon as you are able to. Give them information on your location and how many people may have been injured in the car accident. Wait for the authorities to arrive and do not try to fix anything yourself, whether on your car or on yourself. Things could get much worse if these proper precautions are not taken.

3. Document Drivers License And License Plate Information

Make sure to take down as much information as quickly as possible. The most important pieces of information to get are the other party’s license plate number, the information of their license, names of any possible witnesses and document the time and location of the accident. If you can, take videos and pictures at the scene of the accident.

Get the names of the police officer and emergency information when 911 assistance arrives.

4. Keep All Of The Medical Records

Make sure you keep any record of medical assistance that you receive. Speak to your doctor to find out the extent of your injuries and keep a record of all your expenses. A personal injury case’s compensation relies on the extent of ones injuries and expenses. The medical records that you keep will act as proof in your case.

5. Get In Contact With Your Insurance

The insurance company may be liable to handle some of your expenses following an accident. The insurance companies may try and avoid paying for your expenses and give you false reasons to why. Make sure that you are documenting any conversation that you have with the insurance companies.

6. Do Some Research On Personal Injury Lawyers
