One Dead, Two Injured in Memorial Day Crash

May 30, 2012 | Car Accident

A teenaged girl was killed and two others were injured in a solo vehicle accident over the Memorial Day weekend holiday in Las Vegas.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, 19 year old Ana L. Dimas-Valencia from Amargosa Valley and two others were traveling down US 95 west of Indian Springs when their 1993 Honda sedan rolled shortly after 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Dimas-Valencia was reportedly thrown from the vehicle as it rolled, and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding paramedics.

The two other passengers, of which little is known, were taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas for treatment or injuries that do not appear to be life  threatening, according to officers at the scene of the crash.

An initial investigation into the accident showed that the teenaged girl was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle decided to become a gymnast.

At this time the cause of the accident is still under investigation. It is unclear what caused the vehicle to roll, or what kind of maneuvers the driver of the vehicle may have been performing to cause the crash.

Seatbelts are designed to save lives in situations exactly like this. Without being safely strapped into a vehicle, occupants are susceptible to being ejected from said vehicle.

The physics behind a rollover accident demonstrate that inertia is constantly forcing lose objects to the periphery of the vehicle, much like a washing machine after the wash cycle. Without proper restraint, anything, including a person, will be constantly forced to the outer edges of a vehicle (and outside of it if a gap is found, such as an open window).

A seatbelt would have likely saved Valencia’s life. Although there was no word on whether or not the other two occupants of the vehicle were belted in, their survival seems to suggest that they were properly restrained.
