DUI Driver Pleads Guilty to 6-Car Crash that Killed 1 in Las Vegas

May 1, 2018 | Car Accident

The DUI driver who was responsible for last week’s fatal 6-vehicle collision that killed 1 woman and injured 3 others plead guilty to felony driving under the influence charges Tuesday morning, April 24th. Sarah Lee, 38-years old of California, appeared before a judge in Las Vegas Justice Court Tuesday morning where she admitted to drinking 2 vodka drinks prior to the collision that killed 32-year old Donneka Harris of North Las Vegas.

Clark County prosecutors say that Lee has 3 previous DUI’s in California and that a significant amount of methamphetamine was present in her system the day of the fatal collision. Citing that she was a danger to the public and a potential flight risk the judge set her pail at $750,000.

On the morning of April 13th around 10:00 a.m. Las Vegas Metropolitan police officers responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Warm Springs Road. The 6 vehicles involved include a black Mercedes, a silver Lexus, a red Ford, a Chevy Malibu, a gray Cadillac SUV and a blue Hyundai. According to Nevada Highway Patrol’s preliminary traffic investigation, Lee was driving in the black Mercedes westbound on Warm Springs Road where she ran through a red traffic light at the intersection with Las Vegas Boulevard. Lee collided into the Chevy Malibu that was traveling southbound on Las Vegas Boulevard. The other vehicles were stopped at a red light in the eastbound lanes of War Springs Road and were impacted by the initial collision. First responders arrived and pronounced Harris dead at the scene. 3 others were treated for minor injuries and transported to University Medical Center for further treatment.

Victor Johnson, an employee at a convenience store located at the corner of the intersection, said that he witnessed Lee fleeing the scene. "I thought she was a pedestrian, crossing the street when she was fleeing the scene," Johnson said. "I thought she was trying to run away from the accident because she was frightened. Had I known it was the person driving the vehicle, I probably would've tried to stop her myself." Officers were able to apprehend Lee who was found in the South Premium Outlet Mall parking lot. Officers also noticed that Lee was having a hard time staying alert, saying she was in pain, and had minor injuries from the crash. LVMPD officers also noticed old “track marks” which is scarring on the arms, caused by repeated injection into the veils with a hypodermic needle. Lee admitted to officers that she was a former heroin user and had last used the drug 2 days before the crash and was on Suboxone, a drug used to wean addicts off heroin. An EMT who was treating Lee told the reporting officer that Lee had admitted to using heroin earlier that day, but Lee denied that she had said that and was transported to UMC for treatment. She was subsequently arrested and booked for felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, and could face charges of reckless driving resulting in a death. She is scheduled to be back in court May 8th.
